‘The Newsroom’ Renewed For a Third and Final Season

HBO pulls the plug on “The Newsroom.”

The network announced Monday, the sophomore series starring Jeff Daniels as a journalist anchor will conclude after the upcoming third season.

“”The Newsroom” is classic Aaron Sorkin – smart, riveting and thought-provoking,” said HBO  programming president Michael Lombardo. “I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.”

Production on season 3 is set to start this spring, with the final season debuting this fall.

“America’s Next Top Model” 20th cycle will premiere this August, with a two-hour premiere on Friday, August 2 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

“Big Brother” is set to return on Wednesday, June 26 on CBS. [EW]

“Good Morning America” weather anchor Sam Champion has been booked to host The Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards, along with HLN network’s A.J. Hammer and Robin Meade. Champion, Hammer and Meade will host the awards live on June 16 from the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

‘CSI: NY’ Alum Joins ‘Covert Affairs’ And More Casting News

Hill Harper joins covert affairs

“CSI: NY” star Hill Harper is heading to “Covert Affairs.”

The crime-procedural actor has been cast in the drama series as a series regular, according to The  Hollywood Reporter.

Harper will play an “ambitious, intelligent and slightly cocky,” CIA station chief in Latin America, who will be looking to make the transition from the CIA’s Latin America station back to Washington.

Harper’s character will try to enlist the help of Annie and Auggie to help him accomplish that goal.

According to TVLine, Harper will not continue with “CSI: NY” if the series get renewed for a Season 10.

‘True Blood’ Casts Jurnee Smollett & Amelia Rose And More Casting News

Jurnee Smollett and Amelia Rose are heading to Bon Temps.

“Friday Night Lights” alumna Jurnee Smollett has joined the vampire drama as a series regular and “90210’s” Amelia Rose Blaire has been nabbed to recur in the upcoming season, according to TVLine.

Smollett will play optimist Nicole, who is concerned with doing the right thing versus doing something for compensation. Meanwhile, Blaire will play Willa, Louisiana Governor Truman Burrell’s (Arliss Howard) daughter, who disagrees with her father over vampire rights.

Dave Annable has been cast in FOX’s comedy series “Ben and Kate.” The actor of ABC’s cancelled drama “666 Park Avenue” will play a  hot college professor. [TV Guide]

Matthew Broderick is heading to “Smash.” The Broadway star will play himself on an episode of the NBC drama series. [Playbill]

Marcia Gay Harden is joining “The Newsroom.” The actress will replace Rosemarie DeWitt’s character on the HBO series. Harden will recur as Rebecca Halliday, a litigator who defends Atlantis Cable News in a wrongful termination suit. [EW]

Betsy Brandt Joins Michael J. Fox’s Series And More Casting News

Betsy Brandt is heading to NBC’s new sitcom.

According to THR, the “Breaking Bad” actress has joined Michael J. Fox’s untitled new NBC sitcom as Fox character’s wife Annie. Annie is described as being “tough yet loyal with a goofy side.”

Brandt joins previously cast: Katie Finneran (“I Hate My Teenage Daughter”) will play Fox’s sister on the show, Wendell Pierce (“Treme”) will play Fox’s boss and Conor Romero (“Person of Interest”) will play his college drop-out son.

NBC has ordered 22 episodes of the comedy series, which is expected to debut this fall.

Rosemarie DeWitt is leaving “The Newsroom.” The “United States of Tara” actress is leaving the show due to scheduling conflicts after shooting only a couple of episodes for the series second season. DeWitt, who was cast as Rebecca Halliday, will be replaced by another actress.

There is a mini Huxtable reunion taking place at NBC. Keshia Knight Pulliam has been cast to guest star on “Guys With Kids” as Bridget, Marny’s (Tempestt Bledsoe) sister. Bridget is described as a fun, irresponsible woman who visits her sister after a bad breakup. The casting will reunite the TV sisters. [TV Guide]

“Melrose Place” alum Heather Locklear is joining the TNT drama “Franklin & Bash” as a series regular. The TV veteran will play Rachel King, “a stunning trial lawyer, with stiletto heels and clothes tailored within an inch of their life.”

Bethenny Frankel is stopping by “The Neighbors.” The “Real Housewives” alumna will guest star in an upcoming episode of the comedy series as a businesswoman who works to help launch Debbie Weaver’s (Jami Gertz) handbag business. [EW]

‘Up All Night’ Adds New Showrunner, ‘Call The Midwife’ Season 2 Premiere Date Announced, PaleyFest to Feature ‘OUAT’, ‘Revolution’ and More

“Up All Night” is getting a new showrunner. “Nurse Jackie” co-creator Linda Wallem will serve as the comedy’s new showrunner and executive producer, Deadline announced earlier this week.

PBS announced the holiday special of “Call The Midwife” airs Sunday, December 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET and Season 2 debuts March 31 at 8 p.m.

The Paley Center announced earlier this week, that next year’s PaleyFest will feature “Once Upon A Time,” “The Newsroom” and “Revolution.” The full schedule for the event will be announced Jan. 9. [Twitter]

The new season of “Kathy” will debut Thurs., Jan, 10th at 10/9c.

Dylan Walsh Joins ‘Revenge’ And More Casting News

Dylan Walsh is heading to “Revenge.”

The “Nip/Tuck” alum has booked a multi-episode arc on the drama series.

Walsh who recently starred on CBS “Unforgettable” as Al Burns will play Jason Prosser, Conrad Grayson’s rival hedge fund manager.

“Revenge” airs Sundays at 9/8c on ABC.

“Go On” has promoted the Cat lady. Sarah Baker, who plays Sonia on the comedy series has been promoted to a series regular. [Deadline]

“Go On” star Matthew Perry is set to reprise his role on “The Good Wife.”

According to CBS, Matthew Perry will reprise his guest role as Mike Kresteva, a slick Chicago attorney who is running against Peter Florrick for the governorship.

Perry’s episode is slated to air in early 2013.

“The Newsroom” has cast former “United States of Tara” actors Patton Oswalt and Rosemarie DeWitt in recurring role in its upcoming season. DeWitt will play Rebecca Halliday, a litigator who defends Atlantis Cable News in a wrongful termination suit. Oswalt will portray Jonas Pfeiffer, the new vice president of human resources at ACN. [Deadline]

Brittany Snow is joining “Ben And Kate” as Lila, a love interest for Tommy in multiple episode arc. [E! Online]

‘Scandal’ Star Heads to ‘Weeds’ And More Casting News

Guillermo will return to Agrestic!

According to TVGuide, Guillermo Diaz, who currently stars on ABC’s hit drama “Scandal” will reprise his role as Guillermo Garcia Gómez in the final three episodes of “Weeds.” Diaz is set to appear beginning with the 100th episode on Sunday, Sept. 9.

As previously reported, “Weeds” will end with a two-part series finale on September 16.  Additionally Mary-Louise Parker told critics, “I think it’s [“Weeds” finale] beautiful. I cried when I read it.”

The series finale is expected to air Sept. 16.
